Speakership Moves to Sandwich for Municipal Year 2024-2025

For the Municipal Year 2024 – 2025, the honour of Speaker of the Cinque Ports has passed to the Town of Sandwich, and The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Sandwich, Cllr Paul Carter, has now taken up this esteemed role.

The Speaker acts as Chair and principal representative of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. The office is held (ex officio) by the Mayor of each of the head ports and two ancient towns, in turn. It passes from one town to the next, on 21 May each year, by a process quaintly described as ‘septennial revolution’.

The major event of the year will be Speaker’s Day, to be held on Saturday 5th October 2024, when all the Cinque Ports Mayors, and various dignitaries, will join together for the Speaker’s Day Procession through Sandwich, and attend a church service in St Clement’s Church.
